Aston Villa fans have slammed proposals for a European Super League that would have a major impact on the Premier League.

It was confirmed on Sunday that 12 clubs – including six from England’s top-flight – have agreed to form a new breakaway league.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are the English clubs involved in the plans.

A further three European teams will be added, before another five clubs are signed up to reach 20. There will be two groups of 10 teams playing each other home and away.

Under current proposals, there would be no relegation from the super league and for the clubs who qualify through their domestic league performance, no guarantee that they would be able to take part the following season.

Villa chief executive Christian Purslow described the plans as ‘grotesque’ during an interview on BBC Radio Four today (Monday).

“The scheme is designed to take away that uncertainty (relegation) and to give predictability to their businesses so that if they’re badly managed or have a poor year, they’re still in the premier tournament,” he said.

“Does that sound like sport or football to you? To me it sounds like a grotesque concept.”

The Premier League released a statement condemning the proposals and a number of former players including Gary Lineker, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand have voiced their opposition.

So too have Villa supporters on social media. Here’s a taste of the reaction:

Conchúr Mac Giolla Léith: “Couldn’t be prouder to be a Villa fan today. They are a disgrace.”

TrueVillan: “I’d like to place on record my thanks to my club #avfc for having absolutely nothing to do with this greedy, shameful power grab in joining the #SuperLeague . We have always been a family friendly club and our decision to avoid this soulless elite is to our owners credit.”

Harry: “We are by far the biggest club in the league now. As Neville said, the six clubs should be punished if they end up staying.”

Connor: “All I’m saying on the topic of the European Super League, is that I’m extremely glad I’m an Aston Villa fan.Founding league member, proper history, and run by owners who respect their fans.”

Pam: “Let them go, and enjoy playing with themselves while the rest get on with playing football. They will never play again in domestic competitions, and players will not play for their country, and deservedly so. Good riddance, #GreedyClubs.”

Jack Whidden: “Imagine being a supporter of one of these so-called “big six” clubs, I actually feel bad for them! Being sold out by some billionaires that could care less about you and your passion. Not my club.”

WHDMTO: “The so called ‘big six’ need a punishment , sick of them thinking they can call the shots constantly. This could be a seismic change for the right reasons, if it is unanimously challenged.”
