Christian Pulisic tipped to be ‘ideal’ transfer solution to Liverpool’s front three issues

Christian Pulisic would be a good fit for Liverpool’s system under Jurgen Klopp according to former Reds goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

The reigning Premier League champions have endured a difficult campaign as they repeatedly struggled with injuries, and face the real possibility of failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Despite Mohamed Salah being the leading goalscorer in the English top-flight, Liverpool‘s front three have been the subject of scrutiny for the misfiring Reds, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino failing to replicate their standards set in previous seasons.

With Pulisic struggling for game-time at Chelsea following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, he has again been linked with a reunion with his former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp at Anfield.

And while Friedel thinks Liverpool’s front three are “second to none” when on form, he believes his compatriot would be a perfect fit for their system under the German.

“I think Liverpool’s system is a good one for Christian, without a doubt,” the former United States international told CardsChat. “He’s very quick, his first steps are quick and even when he gets going, he’s very quick.

“The pressing style that Jurgen Klopp likes to play under, then the quick counter-attack and the runs through the lines, I think he would be able to perform very well in that system.

“Pulisic has the potential to be the most successful American player in mainland Europe but it is still relatively early days with a new head coach at Chelsea who I hope he can do well under.

“At the beginning of the season, he was unplayable at times and doing really, really well. Let’s just see how it goes for the US.

“He is our best attacking player, and we’ve got a few of them. We need him to stay injury free, that’s for sure.

“I have no idea if that’s a player that they (Liverpool) are looking at, but that type of system would be ideal for someone like Christian.”

He continued: “Liverpool don’t need to change any of them if they’re all three happy and performing. The quality that the three (Mane, Firmino and Salah) have are second to none.

“But at times this season they haven’t all looked happy. These are the little idiosyncrasies that we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. Normally if you take them off the pitch and things are happy you’re not acting a little bit petulant, things of that nature.

“So, something is going on. If it’s a little bit of a bigger issue than a smaller issue, then that might have to be addressed.”

However, Pulisic wasn’t the only player Friedel tipped his former side to make a move for should Klopp decide to strengthen his attacking ranks.

“With regards to the players that would come in, I’m sure they have their analytics department, they have their scouting department, and they’ll know who to bring in,” he said. “I would imagine it would be a player in the ilk of a (Ousmane) Dembele or a player who is at a big club, or in a big league that is performing well because you’re Liverpool and you want to sign a player that is going to help you win the League or the Champions League.

“So that would be the type of player that they would go for of course. But you might not have to, depending on what the actual issues are. Can they be resolved internally? Is it a contract dispute? Who knows.

“These are the things that go on at every club, unless you’re there, unless you’re the players agent and whoever at the club is doing to negotiations, we just don’t know.

“There is something a little bit off but hopefully it can be rectified quickly for Liverpool’s sake.”
