A number of Newcastle United supporters have been reacting furiously to Steve Bruce’s revelation that DeAndre Yedlin missed out on the game against Aston Villa on Saturday due to his work permit not arriving on time.

The right-back, or right-wing-back, position has been a problematic one for the Magpies throughout the season so far, with Bruce having handed seven league appearances to Javier Manquillo, five to Emil Krafth and six to Yedlin so far (Transfermarkt). The USA international had found himself far down the pecking order at the start of the campaign but he featured in five successive matches before missing the last two games.

It has since been reported that the 27-year-old has yet to be given any information by the club over his potential long-term future. Yedlin’s contract expires at the end of the season and, judging by his recent comments, it seems he has an uncertain future ahead over the next few months.

His absence from the squad at Villa was notable due to his contract situation, but Bruce revealed that the reason for his absence was the no-arrival of a work permit in time for him to feature, according to Keith Downie on Twitter. The Magpies boss also confirmed that he does not know how long it will be until that issue is solved.

Newcastle fans fume over Yedlin’s work permit situation

Many Newcastle fans were left fuming that the club failed to ensure that the defender’s work permit had arrived on time for the Villa game, with some suggesting that the “farcical” incident sums up the lack of leadership at St James’ Park.
